The Myrtle Beach area is known for its amazing beaches, beautiful sunsets and plethora of great restaurants and food.

But if you want to get an elevated view of the Grand Strand, there are several rooftop bars that offer just that.

Here are eight places to visit:

Sitting along the Boardwalk, the Myrtle Beach spot at 1210 N. Ocean Blvd. is part restaurant and part beach bar. Diners can eat oceanfront, which includes the rooftop bar.

It has become a dining attraction for visitors in downtown Myrtle Beach.

This North Myrtle Beach spot is a rooftop dance and party bar, where people can listen to a DJ nightly playing R&B, Top 40 and club music.

Located along the city’s main drag at 214 Main St., the bar is just one block from the ocean.

The restaurant and bar, located at 1410 N. Ocean Blvd., overlooks Myrtle Beach’s Boardwalk and Atlantic Ocean. It also has rooftop patio where diners can enjoy live music and dining.

Soho’s Myrtle Beach location at 407 21st Ave. N. “doubles as a savory eatery by day and a chic hotspot by night,” according to its website.

Located just two blocks from the ocean, Rooftop21 is an open air rooftop bar and lounge, offering food items, cocktails and a vertical garden wall.

Wicked Tuna has two locations, one in Murrells Inlet and the other in Myrtle Beach. In addition to its waterfront dining and great views of the MarshWalk, diners can take in the views from up high with outside dining on the deck.

Located at 1111 3rd Ave. in the historic district of Conway, Rivertown Bistro has a two-tiered main dining room, or diners can choose to dine on the upstairs deck that overlooks downtown Conway.

The culinary menu offers such food items as steaks, seafood and pasta.

This full-service marina and restaurant in Murrells Inlet not only offers food at The Quay Seafood Grille, it also offers customers a chance to take in the views of the marsh on its rooftop bar.

The marina, located at 1508 S. Waccamaw Drive, has two stories, with the first floor being interior dining and the second floor the rooftop bar. Reviewers say that the marina has the best sunset views aside from Key West, Florida.

Happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m. and a new menu rolls out April 1.

For those looking for an Instgram worthy post, Gulfstream Cafe offers just that. Those dining at the Garden City restaurant at 1536 S. Waccamaw Drive, can head up to the rooftop deck and watch the sunset over the inlet.

The restaurant’s website says that it has been in business for more than 30 years, offering fresh seafood and southern favorites.

GEORGETOWN — A controversial decision to allow two residential lots to be built on the site of a decommissioned water facility in Litchfield Beach could end up in court.

Georgetown County recently granted a request by the Peninsula at Inlet Point South homeowners association to have a decommissioned water treatment facility flipped into two 10,000-square-foot single-family lots, despite months of deferrals and complaints from homeowners — including University of South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner.

The water treatment facility along Inlet Point Drive and Norris Drive was built for the Peninsula at Inlet Point South, which consists of 33 single-family lots along the ocean that were approved in the late 1990s before the Peninsula was connected to county water and sewer service.

Geographically, the decommissioned utility is located within Inlet Point South — 13 single-family lots along marshland and 13 others along the ocean. Three separate homeowners associations operate in the Inlet planned development, one of which — the Peninsula homeowners' association — is a sub-association of the Inlet Point South homeowners' association.

Besides the two residential lots, the former site of the water facility would be used for open space and the Peninsula community wants to repurpose the existing water tank for irrigation purposes.

Raymond Newton, alongside Bob Anderson and Everett Carolina, were the three council members who voted against the project when it passed with a 4-3 majority vote on Dec. 12.

Wesley Peel, a Columbia attorney representing a group of Inlet Point South homeowners, said his clients are reviewing their legal options but should be filing something within 30 days.

“I’m a little bit mystified,” Peel said. “Everybody that’s going to be affected by it is against it. They just passed it over all of their objections. Of course, I’m not from there, but that seems to be an unusual action by a council to me.”

Complaints about the project from Inlet Point South homeowners range from concerns about a lack of notice about public hearings to the potential for obstructed views of the marsh and ocean and the loss of property values.

“We looked at the water plant for 20 years,” said Russ Hunt, an Inlet Point homeowner. “Now they want to devalue our homes by blocking our views, which is a violation of our covenants. This is fundamentally not right or equitable. It creates a hostile environment in the neighborhood.”

During a March 28 meeting when the plan was first deferred, Newton expressed doubt that the council would be able to make a decision that would satisfy everyone.

"We're not attorneys, we never will be attorneys, hopefully," Newton said on March 28. "And I just think this is something that we really need to consider voting down, let the two sides get together … come to an agreeable decision which will satisfy both parties."

Attorney Dan Stacy Jr., a representative for the Peninsula at Inlet Point South HOA, said his group paused efforts to move forward with the proposal after a request by Newton. He said the homeowner associations met with a professional mediator in an attempt to come to a mutually satisfactory solution.

“We had fundamental disagreements between the two parties," Stacy said. "Unfortunately, it did just not work out."

Tanner, an Inlet Point South homeowner, has traveled to Georgetown County for months to voice objections about the proposed lots, saying any homes built would block his and his neighbors’ view of the ocean and violate restrictive covenants.

“I was against it,” Tanner said. "I didn’t think there should be construction, but as a neighbor, as a friend, I said we would get together and try to find a solution. We thought we were there, and ended up not being there.”

Anderson expressed his dismay that the two homeowners’ associations could not come to an agreement through mediation.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation also has live traffic cameras throughout the area to help track road conditions to get to the beach safely.

South Carolina health inspections recently found numerous violations at two Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach restaurants.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control frequently inspects restaurants, and as of March 13, 2024, the inspections were up to date.

Location: 8739 Highway 17 Bypass South

Grade: 79 percent

SCDHEC inspected the restaurant March 6, 2024, and found several violations. The report found a build-up inside an ice machine, and bowls and ladles stored as clean had soiled surfaces.

According to the report, Chicken Wings were not stored at the proper holding temperature, and ready-to-eat chicken wings, pasta, and brisket did not have a date label.

SCDHEC also found a refrigerator with damaged gaskets, and there were soiled surfaces in the walk-in cooler, between the fryers, on cookline equipment, at the standing mixer and at the bar beer taps.

Along with other violations, Tavern In Surfside is required to have an on-site follow-up inspection within 10 days for the violations found. SCDHEC’s report noted that Tavern In Surfside could be downgraded if they do not address the violations.

Grade: 83 percent

Burger King’s Dick Pond Road location was inspected March 6, 2024, and SCDHEC found several violations.

SCDHEC’s report found an employee did not use gloves while working with food. Chemical spray was improperly stored, and a freezer had a broken front wheel, according to the report.

The walk-in freezer had a build-up of ice, and there was a thick build-up of residue underneath the ice cream machine. Furthermore, SCDHEC also found part of the ceiling broken near the ice machine. SCDHEC’s report also found metal inside the walk-in cooler torn, and missing floor tiles near the mopsink.

Along with other violations found, Burger King is required to have an on-site, follow-up inspection within 10 days, according to SCDHEC’s report.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A Myrtle Beach resort will pay $26 million to settle a federal lawsuit filed after a 3-year-old suffered serious chemical burns while visiting the Caribbean Resort in 2020, attorneys for the family said in a news release.

The incident happened over the 2020 Memorial Day weekend while the family was visiting the resort operated by Brittain Resorts.

According to the law firm Trial Lawyers for Justice, 3-year-old Ashtyn Douglas’ injuries were caused by a swimming pool that had “dangerous and illegally high levels of chlorine.”

“The resort looked beautiful, the resort looked safe,” attorney Nicholas Rowley said. “But what was in the water, was not only dangerous but illegal.”

The lawsuit revealed that the chlorine level records provided to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control had been falsified for multiple years.

The family first noticed Douglas’ symptoms after leaving the resort to return home, the attorneys said. His condition became worse over several hours before his parents took him to a pediatrician the next morning.

“As a 3-year-old, you don’t understand why it is that you’re in pain, why it is that you’re hurt,” Rowley said. “He was admitted to the hospital for a week where they treated his burns and then had to debride him.”

Douglas was eventually admitted to the University of North Carolina Burn Center where he was diagnosed and treated over the course of a week, attorneys said.

Douglas’ family later contacted DHEC, suspecting the burns came from exposure to elevated chemical levels in the resort’s pool, attorneys said. DHEC subsequently shut the pool down after testing showed dangerously high chlorine levels.

“This corporation and its insurance companies refused to settle this case year after year and refused to accept responsibility for what happened to an innocent little boy,” Rowley said. “The conduct and reckless disregard for the rights and safety of children and their families at this resort was egregious.”

Rowley said in his statement that the resort’s log book showed normal levels on both days the child was in the pool but that an investigation revealed that a resort worker certified in pool operation filled in data on days that he wasn’t working, including the one when the child was burned.

“This record setting settlement will not only fully compensate a little boy and his family but will send a powerful message to corporations across the country that callous disregard for the rights and safety of resort guests and children has big consequences,” Rowley said.

Rowley said the jury trial would’ve been sometime late spring or summer if they hadn’t agreed to pay. He added that the resort’s certified pool operator would fill in log entries on days he wasn’t even working.

Rowley said he hopes this serves as a wake-up call to the pool and water industry.

“The one thing that this family has not heard is ‘I’m sorry,'” he said. “The reason why this family brought this case is to make sure this didn’t happen to anybody else, especially another child.”
